for Postfix's way of using LMDB and with respect to dropping databases 
relative to transactions, you are right.

For other packages, less so.  One of the offending APIs is 
mdb_env_get_maxkeysize(). It was changed in LMDB 1.0.0; and while in 
LMDB 0.9, it would already give useful results after mdb_env_create and 
before mdb_env_open, it returns 0 in LMDB 1.0.0 and LMDB 1.0.1, and 
must, as of LMDB 1.0.0 be called later, after a successful 
mdb_env_open() only.

It was only in LDAP release 1.0.1 that the documentation was fixed in 
response to a defect report by Steffen Nurpmeso. Hence FreeBSD's lmdb0 
port and package do have a useful purpose.

This is also not mentioned in LMDB's upgrading.doc, I have asked to add 
it via <https://bugs.openldap.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10572>.
