Do a "scan for new messages" instead - "rebuild folder tree" only
updates the directory tree, not the files in it (without actually

Sure: Before recreating the folder, the .sylpheed_cache existed, but
didn't contain the new (mutt) headers. Sylpheed finds the cache file
and compares the timestamps found in it with the messages on your hd.
Cause the (existing!) files didn't change, the cache looks intact and
Sylpheed uses the data from it rather than scanning that dir.
Effect: No new messages are visible.

After you created that dir and copied the messages to it, there was
either no .sylpheed_cache file or the timestamp of the messages
changed (cause you copied them). Thus Sylpheed had to rebuild it
by scanning the dir (showing the new messages).

Btw., using "View/Update summary" may be sufficient.
