The editor seems to randomly change the font to whatever you have selected in Options → Preferences → Viewer/Editor → Profile Layout → Regular Text (for me it constantly changes to Mononoki).
 
And yes, the HTML editor is quite atrocious – the things that bother me most are:
* caret often doesn't appear at all, so I can't see where the insertion point is (may be related to me using high contrast mode in Windows)
* selection behaves weirdly (and completely differently from other Windows programs); there are problems when selecting with both keyboard and mouse; clicking often doesn't dismiss the selection, nor does it move the caret
* typing <space>. removes the space, which is annoying because I often have to mail about file extensions or IPs
* undo/redo don't always work properly (redo doesn't restore undoed data)
* try replying to this message in HTML mode, and specifically see what happens when you try inlining your replies between bullet points in this list
* these points apply specifically to PureHTML editor; RichText doesn't have these problems, but is completely unusable for me, because it forces the messages to use my high contrast colours, which are unreadable to most other people
