Thanks for the feedback Derek - The script does run freshclam to populate/update the definitions before starting clamd, but the thought was that the admin would determine how they prefer to do their updates, either running freshclam from a cron job, or running the freshclam service. The installer has been updated to enable the freshclam service, but the rest will be up to the admin.
