Oh, man. All the political subtext is lost in favour of increasingly
elaborate soap-opera mythmaking. And the only reason the mythmaking gets
so ridiculously elaborate is because the writers figured they had to stop
making things up as they went along and try to *explain* everything -- but
all the constant retconning just makes it that much more obvious that they
were making things up as they went along all along in the first place.

And *then* they produced a TV-movie, The Plan, which basically tries to
fill all the gaps from the first two seasons in light of the back-story
that was invented while they wrote seasons three and four.

I mean, seriously, no real spoilers here, but there is a point in season
four where someone gets shot in the head, and *SUDDENLY THEY REMEMBER LOTS
OF STUFF* and they go on and on and on filling out the back-story with a
lot of exposition. Really lazy, gimmicky writing, that was.

*Some* things work very well in the fourth season, though. I shouldn't
complain *too* much, as the show had quite a bit going for it.
