Over two years ago, Jim Hill (a reporter who specializes in Disney 
coverage) reported that Lasseter was the one who had decided to ditch the 
sequel idea proposed by Steve Lisberger (director of the original Tron) 
and replace it with another story that would have more "heart", hence the 
current sequel revolves around a separated father and son.

Interestingly, the "consultations" that were reported a few months ago 
made much the same point: the Pixar "brain trust" told the Tron filmmakers 
to try to put more "heart" or "emotion" into the movie.

Incidentally, if you watch the clip from The Pixar Story at my blog post 
below, you'll hear Lasseter state explicitly that he "wasn't excited by 
what I was seeing" in Tron, but the *potential* for computer animation was 
what excited him in the early '80s.
