But it makes a mockery of real security concerns. How are we supposed to take any govt. security claims seriously when they use if for this kind of bs? Due to the nonsense with TSA, 99% of the homeland security crap and then this kind of stuff I’m skeptical of any national security claims they make.

I said the issue here was stupid. I just see this as such a trivial issue I refuse to compare it to release sensitive military data that could endanger lives.

If it’s a government building it is my building in a very real sense. We need to decide which is more important to us: freedom or safety. I’m partial to freedom because I realize life has risks and no one can assure me complete safety at all times anyway.

Using national security as an excuse to keep govt. building plans, (we aren’t talking a military installation), secret is bullshit. It used to be said that patriotism was the last refuge to which a scoundrel clings but I don’t believe it is true anymore. Security is the last refuge and our govt is clinging to it something fierce.

Wait, construction plans are a civil liberty? Really?

Yes, I agree, keeping the plans hidden is stupid, but calling that a civil liberty issue just seems like we are cheapening the concept more than it already is.

You say “doing crap like this”, but I am failing to see a victim here. This is not thuggary, this is stupid bureaucracy.

You know, when we have government doing crap like this with impunity...I think a good dose of wikileaks is in order.

The government is supposed to be of the people, by the people, for the people....but they sure don't want the people knowing what they are doing. Is there nothing that the government can't claim needs to be secret?

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against the state after it refused to release the construction plans for a barn used to store road salt, on the basis that doing so would be a security risk.

[...]

Chiaffarano filed an OPRA request for the state's building plans, but was denied her request as the state cited a 2002 executive order by Gov. James McGreevey.

The order, issued in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, allows the state to decline the release of public records that would compromise the state's ability to "protect and defend the state and its citizens against acts of sabotage or terrorism."
