Ah, that *is* an interesting point.

**yea.  They made the story that Ledger was either self mutilated or a victim of
child abuse.  But he was never seen as anything other than the Joker.  Would we
have felt the same way about the Burton movie is Jack had been the joker with no
origin, just evil on a rampage?

Bane, by way of contrast, is a full-blown supervillain -- the man who literally
broke Batman's back, in fact -- and he didn't even appear in the comics until
after Tim Burton had directed the first two movies.  All of the other villains
-- even Falcone -- date to the pre-movie era.

** yea he was Ivy's sidekick in the movie, what an expansion.
