Actually, The Dark Knight was pretty naturalistic in its depiction of the 
city at times.  Certainly much more so than Batman Begins, where the urban 
design of Gotham City is an integral plot point.  And certainly way, *way* 
much more so than the Burton-Schumacher films, which were obviously shot 
on a really bogus-looking indoor set.

Of course, the comics have been portraying Gotham City as a "dark" place 
since the 1970s, at least.  So it only makes sense that the movies would 
follow suit.
