Heck they could have named the improved XP "XPlus", and even used the "iiabdfi" 
line to market it.

Isn't this a problem of the never ending conflict between the marketing people 
and the engineering ones?  Was a new OS really needed to replace XP?  (I still 
have it on a laptop and I find it as easy to use as W7).  Couldn't the changes 
that might have been needed, wifi/networking etc. been done with updates/addons 
to XP?  Wasn't Vista really about having something to release that could be sold 
as a *new* OS, and then W7 created because Vista was such a PoS and they 
couldn't go backwards to XP because that would require having to admit why Vista 
was created/released in the first place.

I don't think marketing people have ever heard the axiom "if it ain't broke 
don't fix it" of if they have they don't believe it.

There's something to be said for that! Exactly what does it take to motivate a 
bunch of millionaires to bust their rears getting an OS update out? I ask that 
knowing full well something similar could happen to Apple.
