Well, it all depends on how you define "black".  Wanda Sykes joked -- in 
Obama's presence -- that the black community was proud of him, but if he 
screwed up, they'd be like, "Hey, who put that mulatto in charge?"

Obama is half-white and was raised almost entirely by his white mother 
and/or her parents.  And while his father was African, his father was 
*not* African-American.  No one disputes either of these points.  So it 
all comes down to what the word "black" is supposed to mean.

Did they really believe that he was not American (i.e. that not only was 
he not fit to *run* for president, but he shouldn't even be allowed to 
*vote* for president, or run for senator, etc., etc.)?  Or only that he 
was not *natural-born*?  There's a difference.
