Hey all, sorry for the double reply ("DCB"):
Regarding your tempo changing question, you don't have to set a temp before getting the KARMA function turned on. Once it's playing, you can turn the knob in the middle top of unit so you can hear the tempo and see the beat flash ('course some cursor around in the display and others use the tap a finger the tempo you want method) -- gee -- this maroon thing is endless!

Wow - it sounds like you are doing everything correctly. After selecting a COMBI, then make sure the on/off button is lit (and adding the latch key as needed ) the thing should just start singing when you hit a key in the lower range. After you get it going, you can hit the REC/WRITE key and then F8/OK and next time you bring up that sound the KARMA function will be on and ready.
I've had my "monster" only a couple months, and I'm printing off files at the first link below this message for my dummy manuals : ).
