Update!!! So today I was changing my strings and one of the ball-ends didn't want to fall out the back of the guitar, so I removed the plate that covers those holes - I had never removed it before. Expecting to see five springs there, I was quite surprised to see only three springs and a 9V battery where the other two springs should be. The black wire from the 9V is soldered onto the metal plate that the three springs are attached to, the red wire disappears into the guts. I'm about 99.9% sure this is connected to the extra toggle switch I have next to the SINGLE/HUMBUCKER toggle.
