That is a strange way to do it.  The server already has the capability
to support multiple clients, and clients sync'd to the same program
are underway.  Wouldn't it make sense to have a PC-based client that's
a peer of a hardware client?  Wouldn't it be a lot easier to write
a PC-based client that interprets VFD codes and throws everything
else away?

Not necessarily.  IP to localhost always works.
