That probably means both complement each other. It's not meant that the 
configuration or collected data is shared in any way.

Exactly.

I have a project like that on my todo list. Although other readers argued 
that Cacti or Zenoss do that well. I have no experience with Zenoss but 
Cacti didn't make things easier than Cricket at all for me. I claim that 
there is so much useless software that claims to be a "unified monitoring 
software" (don't make me start about commercial systems that are just 
plain crap) that I'd rather invest time into my own software instead of 
trying everything else. Call me stupid. ;)
