Oh, my bad. I was under the impression that although mingw could do it,
cygwin had problems. Sorry.

Well, whatever you do, please do explain it to me ("why I needed to do XYZ")
- eb-lite *shouldn't* need any special modifications to compile, if it's
somewhere which supports POSIX I/O and Berkley sockets, so any mods necessary
probably belong in the main tree anyway.
