IMO, this should be done as part of the GUI, for example in the EbQt 
preferences:

	[x] Start backend automatically if it's not already running

(Switched on by default)

Colin did a very nice thing like this for Sylpheed Claws. Probably worth 
looking at the source for that.
 
Another feature that is keeping me on Ayttm for now: Jabber support!
