FTP to server works. ls command does not

OK, here is my dilemma:

I installed wu-ftpd 2.6.2 on AIX 5.3.   I have started fiddling with  
inetd.conf but am unable to get the ls command to work for either  
real or anonymous users. The command executes but lists nothing.  At  
one point I had it working for real users but not anonymous and now  
neither work... cd command works fine for both real and anonymous  
users (tested this theory with uploads to ftp server).  Any ideas  
will be greatly appreciated.
