Convert Characters ?

Can ftpconversions file be used to translate charecters in file names?
Instead of denying files with "*" or "/" or other bad charecters we would
like to convert them to underscores.  Can ftpconversions be setup to do
this....so that if a user trys to send a file called"    one*is/old.gif
ftpconversions would convert that name and actually store it on the server
as name:   one_is_old.gif    ??
