That would make parsing considerably tricky I think and I don't
exactly see the benefit you are preaching. There are a lot more
important changes to be made to the code, you change seems trivial but
is in fact asking for the entire parsing to be changed.

Work on all projects of the ilk of irssi tend to be focused on
functionality and bug fixing.

If you have the skill then jump in and offer patches.
