setting up mail notifications for the first time

Windows version 1.8.7
OS: windows 32 bit
Mail server: exchange 2010 with pop3/smtp

I have my users created, nodes in the list, ready to get emails now. I tried to make changes in the $OPENNMS_HOME/etc/javamail-configuration.properties to set it to the smtp address that works for all my other devices. Even gave it an AD username/pass for an account with a mailbox. Still no joy. Any ideas?
