You don't give any hint as to why you think this putative pptdauth would be
more robust than what already exists.

Note that authentication is done by pppd, not by pptpd (pptpd controls the
creation and teardown of a GRE tunnel between the two end points, but it's
a Point to point networking connection managed by pppd which does the
authentication, configuration and carries the networking traffic).

pppd does have a plugin architecture which you could investigate, but I
suspect 1) that you don't want to actually write a plugin yourself, and 2)
what you are asking for is not actually possible, because the server-end
doesn't have the plaintext password of the user.
