Thanks. Sometime within the last week or two, updating my
Gentoo system switched the default charset from iso-8859-1 to
UTF8 without my knowledge.  After setting the locale to one
that uses iso-8859, the problem goes away.

I think I'll wait a while before switching to UTF8.  It's not
like I can read anything that can't be written in 7-bit ascii
anyway.
