it doesn't seem to do that for me - i tested and tried quite a bit, but never 
noticed snntpd writing to the fifo.
is there a flag snntpd needs to write stuff to the fifo? ( The man page says 
it is writing when the fifo exists )

however - i did try out the opition "-a age" of sngetd (it's not mentioned in 
the man page, and i discovered it by accident), and tough i don't know what 
that option exactly does, sngetd seems to work now.

So i only need to find a way echoing the group to the fifo when a client 
browses the group (or something like that)

You mean nobody never ever thought of syncing a global group to the upstream 
server? I admit i am a newbie, but this i simply don't want to belive 
this! :-)

Point is:
I want to provide acces to a the university network newsgroup in the internal 
network of a student hostel, so people that have troubles connecting to the 
internet still can read the newsgroup, since in that newsgroup is lot of 
discussion about how to connect to the net
