Another suggestion, again if it's ExpressionEngine you're using, is to see
if there is a plug-in that can solve the problem.

Rick Ellis at PMachine has created a XML Encode plug-in
(http://plugins.pmachine.com/index.php/browse/details/xml-encode/) that
converts reserved XML characters to entities for use in the RSS templates.
Once you install this plugin, wrap anything you want to be processed by it
between these tag pairs:

{exp:xml_encode}
text you want processed
{/exp:xml_encode}

Conversely, Paul Reed's HTML Strip plug-in strips out HTML code from text,
even if the tags are converted into HTML entities
(http://plugins.pmachine.com/index.php/browse/details/html-strip/).
