Thanks for the response, Tõivo. To answer your questions:

1) This does not seem to happen with any other software, including Windows 
Explorer.
2) I tried the earliest Unison version on GitHub, 2.48.3, and it does the 
same thing.

Our server is a TrueNAS running Samba, so I tried sharing a folder from 
another Windows machine and in that case did not get the issue. So there is 
some difference with our server that is contributing to this happening, but 
it hardly seems like an unusual server situation.
