An rsync that takes several minutes works fine.
But an ssh login will disconnect in fewer than five minutes of inactivity.
Possible that some setting on the server doesn't like unison's method of applying changes.

I used chmod locally and on the server to make all the permissions match.
That skipped all the dot files (.xxx), so they still showed up as props changes.
Held down the L key and got through the list in two seconds.
Then applying changes seemed to work.
So it really seems like the previous attempts (holding down 'L' for ten minutes) made the server disconnect.

The messages from unison at start:
Looking for changes
  Waiting for changes from server
Reconciling changes
makes it sound like unison is going through the list locally.
if so, and it doesn't frequently say something to the sever, then it _will_ time out.

Anyway, I have now had one success and will hope that continues.
