If I understand your question correctly, yes, you can simply use rpm
itself to add the package, never tell up2date about it, and everything
will (should) work fine.

Its an old debugging copy of the "rpm" parameter. 
xrpm
yrpm
zrpm are just variable names that current won't do anything with, that
kept me and John from having to constantly retype everything in the
config file.
