RE: anti-spam filtering on this list? challenge responses?

It appears that this issue came up on the swn-talk list a few months ago,
also in regards to Stephan Verrips' autoresponder.  At the time, Matt W was
not able to identify Stephan's subscribed email address so as to be able to
unsubscribe him.  I checked the swn list archives and have found no posts
by Stephan on swn-talk or swn-dev.

I have since created a mail filter to throw email from '[email protected]'
in my junk folder.  I disagree with your statement 'Automated response is a
tool that people "with responsibilities" use to make sure that those
emailing them know they aren't being ignored.'  and it appears others do
too when I look at the archives referenced above.  In this case, Stephan is
the one being ignored, because his mail is going directly to the junk
folder of several list subscribers.  Personally, I would feel ignored if I
emailed someone and then their email system answers me with a form letter
automatic response.

There are better techniques than C/R systems.  My main point of contention
is I did not send Stephan any email directly.  The only email I sent went
to [email protected] and that mailing list server attempted to send a
message to Stephan.  As I did not email Stephan myself, I do not expect an
autoreply from his account.  Had I emailed him directly, I would be less
bothered by this autoreply.  Autoreplies have no place on mailing lists and
neither list lurkers nor list posters should have to put up with
autoresponders.

For those who don't like SpamBayes, look at PopFile
(http://popfile.sourceforge.net/), a different Bayes email filter.

you don't like automated responses you can train it to send it to your junk
folder. This way you will never have the sorrow of dealing with 1 little
email. You won't even have to click delete! Fancy that! 
If we were getting 200 "I'm not ins" then sure that's a problem. One email
is not a problem and the whole group shouldn't have to change because you
have enough time to complain! You can always remove yourself from the list,
that will solve it as well.

 I agree. C/R system should NOT be used. The URLs you gave provide perfect
examples of why.
  
 For those unfortunate enough to have a C/R system thrust upon them by an
organization, I feel very sorry for them & agree that something should be
done with the system to prevent it from willy-nilly responding to each &
every person on a mailing list.
