WiMAX will make much better use of the spectrum than is possible with
current WiFi gear.  With 50 MHz a base station will deliver over 200 Mbps
bandwidth.  With the combination of smart antenna subsystems, such as that
announced this week by Airspan, a macro size base station can host up to
twelve sectors using smart antennas to prevent overlap.

WiMAX can be channeled from 1.25 MHz (all systems so far start at 1.75 MHz)
up to 20 MHz per channel (most top out at 10Mhz/channel as multiple channels
can be used anyway).  The 802.16e nomadic-mobile version of WiMAX will use
SOFDMA to allow sub-channelization and duplex operation within channels.
that lends itself well to MIMO-AAS as well as WMESH as ways to increase
effective bandwidths.  Most systems won't offer much in the way of MIMO-AAS
or WMESH for a while yet because it isn't considered to be needed until
networks build out substantially.  There will be some use of WMESH for
infrastructure routing but nothing I've yet seen for end-user device clouds.

The first large scale deployment of WiMAX will likely be in announced
deployments in S. Korea, Japan, the U.K.  Korea will probably be the largest
with nation-wide coverage expected to start rolling out early in 2006.  This
is based on their home turf  WiBro standard which is now being incorporated
into WiMAX.  It uses similar OFDMA-TDD technologies as are the base for
WiMAX/802.16e.  MIMO-AAS is an optional enhancement as are WMESH and
advanced HARQ and turbo FEC methods.  Mainland China, India and Malaysia,
the world's largest concentrations of people and fastest developing
economies and users of wireless will be where WiMAX will probably grow the
fastest and become institutionalized the easiest and deepest.

The U.S, is still a third world country in terms of BB services and nothing
looks likely to change that soon.  The politics of incumbents looks to be
more powerful than the promise for creating new methods of proliferating low
cost information services. This may take decades to play out fully but the
barnacled ways of American telecomm will eventually give way.
