I too have been looking for alternative 200mW CPE. I have considered
using the WRT54G with OpenWRT and the software power boost up. BUT it
always seemed that CB3s outperformed the WRTs. Any suggestions will be
very much appriciated.

*** what do you mean by outperformed? on short links (~2 miles), I have yet
to see more bandwidth on CB3 (11b) than any WRT device (11g). on short
packets (or packet storms), 11g is also performing better than 11b. don't
get me wrong - when I don't have perfect LOS and/or have long distance, I
would always use old lucent or prism based equipment.
additionally, with openwrt you get linux equiped device, so you can run
routing and that is rip/ospf dynamic routing if you want/need.
