FWIW, I have proofread these five new strings of English text. They are
fine.

I do not, however, recall proofreading all the texts in the FSFE Community
Database. Rather, I have been told that the other strings there are not
worth proofreading:

thank you for your offer. I don't think it makes much sense to proofread
these texts, since they are distributed all across the program code and
mostly consist of single words or very short phrases, because they are
mostly labels of some controls of the user interface.

Thanks,

I respectfully question this. For example, both the second and third of
the new strings contain flagrantly split infinitives. There is a
long-standing prejudice against split infinitives in English:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Split_infinitive , but that lengthy analysis
is largely devoted to defenses of the split infinitive. The classic first
edition of Fowler's "Dictionary of Modern English Usage" (of which I sent a
softcover copy for use in the office) had a masterful treatment of the
subject on pages 558 through 561.

He describes categories of the English-speaking world: those who neither
know nor care what a split infinitive is; those who do not know, but care
very much; those who do know what split infinitives are, and condemn them;
and those who know what split infinitives are, and approve them. You might
think that these four cases exhaust the possibilities, but Fowler then adds
a fifth case, those who know what a split infinitive is and distinguish
between cases in which it is desirable and undesirable! As he says, "the
author's opinion has perhaps been allowed to appear with indecent
plainness." (This analysis, which does not appear in the excellent latest
edition of the book, is in my opinion a sufficient reason for having the
first edition at hand. It is a century old, but still has a great many
useful and amusing things to say. See, for additional examples, the first
two sentences of "Superiority" on page 585, and the note at the end.)

I conclude that the split infinitives in the second and third of these new
texts are desirable, but it is clear that there are those who will disagree
with me (Fowler's third category). For this reason, I think that
proofreading the other texts in the FSFE Community Database might also be
desirable. Where can I find them?
