All books, all software should be free, it's a nice dream but it's never going to happen. Idealism is one thing reality is another. Many authors/technical writers go through University for a special degree. Point in fact at the University of Waterloo Rhetoric and Professional Writing is an honours degree that covers topics like Linguistics, Semiotics, and document design.
