Lately the SCO firm, in a major play to return the Unix market to the state it was in before Linux allowed everyone to have a Unix Like O/S, has been asking for a US$700 "licence fee" for each processor running Unix. They have been bandying around a figure that Linux has about a Million Lines that are derived from System V UNIX. One of the local members of the "Linux User Community of Kanata" did an experiment and determined at overall, a Debian 2.4.18 Sparc kernel has about 3,292,858 lines including blank lines and all the hardware drivers. The actual Kernel code, excluding the drivers and blank lines is less than a million lines. (913,707) Now a quick figuring, assuming all the lines blank and all count, SCO is saying that they "own" about 30% of the Kernel. This means that by their calculation Linux is "worth" over US$2,000.00 Now I would be the last person on earth to assign any credibility to SCO. But it seems that some folks do really see value in having an OS that does not fall prey to Worms on a regular basis.
