From a recipient's perspective, spam is intrusive and rude, and in sufficient volume costs time and money to reduce. From a marketer's perspective, email offers a reduction in costs, which lowers risk. Example, I've seen adverts on the side of the road saying "2000 leaflets @ R500". I've also heard that leaflets have a roughly 7% success rate. So ~140 sales for R500, and a lot of paper trash. Disclaimer: it may take several rounds of leaflets to find a profitable sale (i.e. someone buying something other than the break-even special). However email to millions is considerably cheaper and generates less obvious waste. So if we assume a million user mail shot, ~7% is 70000 possible sales for R500. With the added benefit of metrics on who reviewed it! But I don't know what the actual conversion rate for email is - I've also heard it described as only 2%. Or perhaps it's more like 0.01%, or ~100 customers per million mailed. More than 100 customers would require several staff to manage various aspects, and spammers are more likely to give the appearance of several staff, than actually hire them. In fact the business of selling goods via unsolicited email is so good, many go into selling unsolicited email services and address lists instead. -- Bretton openpgp: http://bretton.hivemind.net/bretton_vine.asc Co-existence / or no existence. - Piet Hein _______________________________________________ IOZ mailing list [email protected] http://lists.internet.org.za/mailman/listinfo/ioz
