Hi, The 20th anniversary of the first TCP/IP network connection to sub-Saharan Africa (1991/11/12) is coming up. This happened at Rhodes, and I've got the go-ahead from our VC to make some sort of fuss about it. However, while the physical connection took place from my and Dave Wilsons office (Room 102 in the Struben Building), there were a whole lot of others involved in the preparations and build up towards making it happen. There's a few protagonists left at Rhodes - myself, Pat Terry and Justin Jonas - but I've got hold of Mike Lawrie - who is keen on the idea, and has lots of proposals about what to do about it, and I am getting hold of Dave Wilson (in Boston), and Randy Bush (in Japan?) to see if they could make it. Other individuals would be Alan Barrett and Chris Pinkham, and any of those who attended the TCP/IP workshops run at Rhodes in the late 1980's. Paul Nash, Mark Elkins, Lucio de Re, Angus Hay, etc. These are just some of the people involved in the days of early networking, but the reality is that everyone reading this message - wherever you are - is able to do so because of their initial efforts. You'd also be welcome to have a look around where some of what you now take for granted started up. It wasn't so obvious 20 years ago... So this isn't simply a "Rhodes" event, it's much wider than that. I'm trying to establish who would be interested in attending (or participating in) some sort of retrospective look back at where we all started off. The only fine print really, is that it be hosted in Grahamstown, at Rhodes, more or less around the anniversary date. So, let me know what sort of enthusiasm there would be? If you have ideas, please share them? It's be great if this - like the initial networking efforts - turned into a communal event. Regards, Jacot -- F.F.
