hi ,

U can use allegro or OpenGL (Mesa) for the purpose. I had used used GL for 
the graphics programming and i prefer GL. But allegro is more basic i think. 
Some of my friends had used it for plotting math functions in Image 
processing Lab.

So if u want basic functionlaties go for allegro (
http://www.talula.demon.co.uk/allegro/) or you can 
for GL if you are really intrested in graphics programming.
