@Peter The recent version of the CDE in Eclipse is really top notch;
it's much better than it used to be, and very usable. I got annoyed at
its continuous build option; this works well for Java apps, but it's
pretty annoying for C++, since C++ syntax is all finicky and
silly--continuous builds leads to continuous errors! However, you can
just switch it off. I used the CDE for C and C++ projects and was very
satisfied. If it's an IDE that you want, Eclipse & KDevelop are the only
choices, imho, but honestly, last time I tried KDevelop it was very
crashy.
=20
@Fred it all really depends on your preferences. Emacs is goofy because
of the meta-alt-f12-M style of getting things done; it can take a long
time to get proficient in it. Vi of course has its own set of silly
keystroke combinations; personally I find them a bit easier to learn.
Both programs meet your syntax-highlighting and code completion
requirements. At the level of real IDEs, KDevelop and Eclipse are the
only usable open source ones, afaik. I guess it's not officially an IDE,
but really, give Scite a try. It's got syntax highlighting and code
completion, and other good features.
http://scintilla.sourceforge.net/SciTE.html And it's simple: that's my
favorite feature.

80% of the C++ linux programmers I know use vim. The other 20%
use emacs. =20

I looked (briefly) at Eclipse a couple years ago. A the time,
it has some C++ plug-ins that I wasn't able to make work. It might be
usable now. =20

I am interested in better C++ development tools. If you find a
good solution, please do share with the BLUG!
