I try to avoid responding to myself on lists and I already deleted
my local copy of my own post so hopefully this will thread for you
and the list.

I ended up spending more time on it anyway and with to my reflief
I was able to get where I needed to be. I still wasn't able to
boot off a CD I wanted to, but I worked around it this way...

I was trying various CDs, burns and so forth and noticed I could
boot PiTuX, which wasn't all that useful, but I was also able to
boot a custom distro (DRG Distro - search the net and ask me about
that if it sounds interesting) I have which lead me to mounting
the hard drive and changing the root pw so I could login and then
install a distro from a the hdd.

I used a trick I found someone else on the net do where you install
an .iso from a current Linux build. I grabbed and .iso, extracted
vmlinuz and initird, adjusted the lilo boot, rebooted with the same
.iso on a cd in the drive (so the install would see it). Voila,
phew. That was a pita, but at least it worked. This post for
posterity.

John
