That is helpful!  That is exactly what I needed.  I tried all sorts of
search terms, and silly me not 'record'

I did not want help debugging audacity.  I need audacity (for audio
editing) so I am interacting with the audacity team.  I need to replace
it for one small, and very important task.

PPS:  Turns out that libportaudio is very easy to use.  I probably will
roll my own.
