Re: Sharing documents on line using Free Software: How?

Markdown works for me but not for everyone I’d like to collaborate with. Git likewise.

Imagine NZ's legislature available online, with the ability to study, review, comment and propose modifications extended not just to MPs but to each citizen. Imagine this same tool available for Dunedin City Council, and for our kids' schools (policy & procedure docs, minutes etc).

I’m not proposing changes to how laws are made, but I do think for legislation (proposed and existing) this would add a lot of sunlight, and reduce the amount to which bills are boiled down to three or four pejorative words in the media. Citizens seeing proposed legislatiion alongside current would I think be more empowered to engage in change, much as we are empowered to engage in helping improve open source software.

Thoughts I’ve been mulling on which crystallised at OS//OS conference and which I’d love to talk further over a beer, a keyboard or what have you.

Anyway, markdown and git etc are great tools, but for wider engagement (whether it’s sharing shopping lists or the recipes for revolution) we really a visual interface for some users.
