He's wrong.  People who provide goods and services, and those who work
for an employer, have to face criticism where their work has not come
up to the standard expected.  Sometimes the criticism is richly
deserved e.g. restaurant where diner is informed that a dish is
gluten-free when it is not.  Sometimes it is 50-50 e.g. builder who
builds architect-designed house suitable for dry climate, not for
Auckland.  He could have warned the client, but it was the architect's
job to design for the conditions and the client's not to insist on a
design unsuitable for the conditions.

Artists - painters, actors, sculptors, musicians - face public
criticism including from people who have not paid (public art, music
on the radio) for their works.

Employers are constrained, by the possibility of legal action, in the
language they can use to employees - but unlike clients and consumers,
they can with due process get rid of an employee who does not please
them.

It's no good any of these other people saying, "But I was trying
really hard, I work long hours, don't speak harshly to me because that
hurts my feelings."

Well they can SAY it of course.
