Router Modem Recommendation?

In recent weeks, I seem to have been beset with
all sorts of ADSL problems. Still trying to resolve
them, but my patience is sorely tried. Rather than
persist with ISP-supplied 'free' items, I wonder if
it's more appropriate to buy what's best for the set-
up that I have?

I'm using a D-Link DIR-300 WAP in the office, as
a LAN switch and an Internet WAP. That causes
problems.

Present setup

Router modem > IPCOP server > two wired LANs.
(Forget LAN 2 as it's irrelevant to the present matter)
LAN 1 goes through a switch, to 2 x PCs and the
DIR-300, which in its turn, connects to a network
printer and another PC. There's a laptop around
that uses the WAP. All are on static IPs.

The 'rub' with the DIR-300 is that it's necessary to
move the ethernet cable from the port marked 'Internet'
to a port marked LAN, for the PC's on the switch or
'near' side of the DIR-300 to be able to be 'see' and/or
access the network printer, or other PC, on the 'far'
side of the DIR-300.

i.e. Either the LAN works or the WAP works, but
not both, at once. I understand there is a configurable
workaround in the DIR-300, to remedy that dilemma.

I'm trying to keep an open-mind on options, now.

What-if I could get a grunty wireless router modem
to put in front of the IPCOP box? That could provide
wifi and the DIR-300 could be left working as a switch.

The IPCOP box and present router modem are out
in the garage, so a weak wifi signal would be 'unhelpful.'

So, if you've followed me thus far, what sort of beast
might you recommend, if the above scenario seemed
like a good one? Or suggest a better 'layout plan,'
instead, perhaps?
