I planned on hosting my own domain (http/smtp), but it gets very few
hits.  On my current cable connection I really notice when CodeRed/Nimda
infected hosts are hitting apache and I have 2-4 ssh sessions open. 
Because of this, I'm really looking for something with more than 128k
upstream.

I'll be telecommuting full time so the home connection will be pretty
important.

Thanks for the input on Ameritech.  I checked out dslreports.com, but
almost all of the ISPs had at least some negative feedback and I really
don't want to give Earthlink any of my money.

My employer will be subsidizing my net connection, so I'll probably go
for a static.  It would definitely make DNS less of a hassle.

AFIAK I'll be in the 6061[46] area code (~IIT for my wife's MS in CS). 
I think I'll be ~40 miles south of their serving area according to the
map on their site.
