When looking take a bootable CD with you to the store and try it on 
different laptops.  Thats what I did and decided upon a Toshiba 
Satellite L300 series.  There were some that did not work.  I now run 
Ubuntu from an external HD.  I removed the internal HD when loading and 
I have independent systems.  I had no problem at Fry's and the 
salesperson even helped me but Best buy yelled at me and told me to get 
that CD out of there. (besides the Best Buy greeter needed a shower 
badly and I could smell him 5 feet away) so its obvious I bought from Fry's.
