It all depends, if you want to use a standard analog cordless phone
with Asterisk or trixbox, the most simple thing to do is use an
external network ATA box, linksys makes some that work pretty well as
does Patton technologies.   if you are a long distance form the base i
suspect noise/static may effect dialing, but should not be any worse
than a land line.

you can also get wifi cordless phones that are just little mobile SIP
devices, just like a cell phone but they just talk wifi/SIP

I am not running asterisk, but my DSL modem has a ATA port im using
with a cordless phone and FWD.
