G.729 compresses well but is patent-encumbered. If you're using
proprietary software or a hardware device as the endpoint, then there's
a good chance it will have a licenced G.729/G.723 implementation and
you'll be fine.

Intel distribute an implementation that is free for non-commercial use,
and GPL wrappers exist to use the Intel code with Asterisk [1]. But to
my knowledge there's no other FOSS VOIP solutions that support G.729.
