The vanity mailing lists had public archives, the idea wasn't to save
Google from themselves.

I don't know about RSS being for geeks. It depends on what you mean by
"geek". If you mean "computer hobbyist or professional" then no, not
really. It's popular with lots of people who want to read a lot of
extremely new text. That tends to mean they're geeks in the broad sense
(about some topic), but not in the sense we use it in. I don't think a
lot of us meet the non-computer obsessives in daily life, we meet people
who either really like computers or who don't, not so much the people
who are obsessed with, say, voices of women in colour in new media, or
the intersection between conservatism and libertarianism. My impression
of the poliblogs (which are much more widely read than the Planets) is
that they have a computer geek on hand, and a bunch of people who read,
write and comment but aren't computer geeks, and the bunch of them are
using RSS.
