thanks for your points

however, yes, the machine is primarily intended as a general purpose
windows desktop, for general use, as well as, some gaming

I really do not envisage installing W7 on it, and, I can't foresee the
need for it (though I could be wrong)

also, based on the history of the last decade (or more), generally, every
new generation of windows required hardware often beyond what current h/w
could provide, thus providing for future o/s is a moot point

also, I do like using my hardware for a reasonable period of time, I still
have 486s in service (multi line fax server, dns, file server, terminal
server, etc), the hardware handles well whatever it was set up for

fwiw, this is the first brand new system for personal use that I bought
since the Pentium 1, when Pentium II came out, I benchmarked it against
the Pentium I was using, whilst actual benchmarks were faster, in the real
usage test, PII was only marginally faster, so, I jumped off the perennial
hardware upgrade bandwagon. Only when I was using Virtual PC, hardware
upgrade was worthwhile, (and, it was done with a cast off PC)
