It did have a horrible UI. Some of the people who worked on Arch went on to work on Bzr with the express intention of providing DVCS features without the horrible Arch UI. The primary goal of the Bzr people was usability. The people who developed Git came from Bitkeeper (something I have never used). Their primary goals were technical ones, in particular speed. The UI started out horrible and has become less horrible over time.
